'A
punchy mix of originals and 1960s-inspired jazz' is what the leaflet promised
from the Jerry Haglund Quartet, and that's exactly what
a modestly sized but enthusiastically attentive audience got.
The Swedish guitarist was last heard at the Vortex as part of the Filthy Six (as was drummer Pat Levett), and he impressed on this occasion for many of the same reasons: an unshowy but intensely musical approach to soloing, a reliance on subtleties of timbre and tone rather than spectacular electronic effects, an ability to propel a band via relatively delicate rhythmic shifts and shuffles rather than headbanging climaxes.
His trumpet foil, Joe Auckland, demonstrated a stylistic compositional debt to Kenny Wheeler, and contributed some absorbing solos along the way, whether the band was addressing originals or material by the likes of Wayne Shorter and Joe Lovano, but special mention should be made of Phil Donkin, whose lithe, powerful bass playing kept the band together and propelled it through the twists and turns of Haglund's pleasingly understated material.
