After
a refreshing break in Cornwall that consumed the rest of my August, Oriole
provided an appropriately mellow welcome back to the jazz (and related
musics) world.
There's a great deal of so-called 'related musics' in Jonny Phillips's writing (see the review of Migration in the CD section for details), but it's seamlessly interwoven with jazz-based improvisation; on this occasion, a particular highlight was the playing of tenorman Pete Wareham, subbing for Ingrid Laubrock: he fitted in beautifully, demonstrating sensitivity and adaptability in equally generous measures, and a capacity Saturday-night crowd (including Nigel Kennedy) were suitably appreciative.
