September 2006 gig reviews by Chris Parker

Rich Core

Thursday 14

Power trios are generally thought to be guitar-bass-drums outfits characterised by screaming, funky hammering-on and pounding respectively, but the term might equally be applied to Rich Core, comprised of pianist Pete Saberton, electric bassist Fred Thelonious Baker and drummer Tony Levin.

Although they play relatively conventional piano-trio fare (on this occasion, Cole Porter's 'You Do Something to Me' and Cy Coleman's 'Witchcraft' plus in-band originals), their approach, courtesy chiefly but not exclusively of Levin's explosive drumming, bristles with dynamic and textural contrasts and positively crackles with energy and sheer power.

Their noise and brio, though, conceal considerable subtlety, the bandmembers' individual prowess always made to serve group ends, so a modest-sized audience was presented with a real treat.
