Trioscope
have been the rhythm section at Denmark's Christiana Jazz Club for many
years, and their resultant cohesiveness and mutual sensitivity, if this
absorbing performance with Ingrid Laubrock was a reliable
guide, are undeniably impressive.
Playing original material by pianist Marko Martinovic (the son of Laubrock's music teacher), they were simply entrancing, energetic, sinuous, powerful, yet demonstrating a hair-trigger responsiveness to each other's playing.
Laubrock fitted in courtesy of her sculptural approach to tenor playing, carefully selecting each tone and timbre before adding it to the band's sound. Relatively complex music, packed with pleasing wrinkles and sudden twists and turns, was made sound straightforward; Chris Potter's remark about this band being able to take the music anywhere was triumphantly vindicated.
