Weston: The Quintet of Uncertainty attracted a gratifyingly large
and appreciative crowd to listen to their winsome mix of free jazz and
classical music.
Actually, the seamless nature of pianist Weston's music, in which elegant, flowing composed lines (faultlessly interpreted by violinist Satoko Fukado, cellist Hanna Marshall, percussionist Nana Tsiboe and saxophonist Yedo Gibson alongside Weston), alternated with free-sounding passages notable chiefly for their textural variety, makes something of a nonsense of such apparently discrete categories.
The musicians (and the audience, which included the personification of such a category-defying approach, John Harle) clearly do not trouble themselves overmuch about such matters, preferring to concentrate on delivering spirited performances utilising all their musical skills, whether interpretative or improvised.
