If
soulful funk/funky soul is what you're after, Xantone Blacq
is your man.
Fronting a sextet (flute, trumpet, bass, percussion and drums, plus his own electric piano), he breezed winsomely through a selection of deep-groove-based material, much of it from his successful (in Japan) album, To the Heavens and Beyond (standout track: the Beatles' classic 'Drive My Car', transformed into an irresistibly funky showstopper).
Both as a musician and as a stage presence, Blacq exudes charm and good vibes, and his voice, a flexible, affecting mix of Stevie Wonder and Al Green, might have been specially created to explore the 'free-range sunshine musics' (from North India, Africa, Brazil and Cuba) he champions.
Joyous, infectiously danceable yet carefully arranged music, perfect for a late-summer night.
