Shaw delighted a largeish audience with his Joni Mitchell material (his
respectful, thoughtful versions of her songs thrown into sharp relief
by the issuing of a recent 'covers' album featuring the likes of Bjork,
Prince and kd lang, splenetically reviewed the previous night by local
pundit Andy Kershaw on Radio 4's 'Front Row' – ('bollocks' was the
celebrated DJ's considered opinion), imaginatively customised standards
and anecdotes about Mel Tormé et al.
Shaw's musical rapport with guitarist Dave Preston seems more impressive each time he appears at the club, and his connection with the audience is simply perfect.
