Here Is The Blues! The Vortex Chess Sessions
The
'Chess sessions' got off to a relaxed, wholly enjoyable start with Billy
Jenkins and Steve Morrison regaling the audience (which included
grandmaster Daniel King) with two sets of contemporary blues, dealing
with such topics as the eschewal of modern technology and the mysterious
build-up of female footwear in the family wardrobe, all delivered with
deadpan humour and embellished with blisteringly eccentric guitar runs
(Jenkins) and elegant, restrained ditto (Morrison). If there's a more
delightful way of spending a Sunday afternoon, I'd like to hear about
it.
Getting (chronologically) ahead of myself, somewhat: the remaining four Sundays saw the duo play completely different sets each week (ten in all); the final Sunday also featured an awards ceremony in which Ben Graham (son of Stephen Graham, editor of Jazzwise) won a gong for most consecutive chess wins (against his father, naturally) and I myself was given (by grandmaster King, no less) a special merit award for attending every week (Fix!).
