April 2007 gig reviews by Chris Parker

Jim Mullen

Tuesday 17

The band's sets ranging between straightforwardly swinging Gorman originals with wonderfully hospitable chord sequences and more recherché fare (a Burns setting – those interested should investigate Mullen's Black Box album Burns – and a beautifully poised visit to 'Nessun Dorma' from Turandot), plus the odd jazz classic (Dave Brubeck's 'The Duke'), the quartet turned in a supremely tasteful but hard-swinging performance featuring faultless, cogent soloing driven by discreet but supple drumming; a classy, poised but pleasingly informal gig from four masters of their craft.

Jim Mullen, Mike Gorman on organ, Stan Sulzmann on saxophone, Matt Skelton, drums.
