April 2007 gig reviews by Chris Parker

Partisans

Friday 20

'Four masters of their craft' could describe Partisans, continuing their series of tenth-anniversary gigs.

On this occasion they were joined by a relatively regular ally, trumpeter Chris Batchelor, whose flaring brilliance not only lent extra textural variety to the band sound but also spearheaded some of the theme statements in a highly effective fashion.

The band's staple fare ('Max', Wayne Krantz's 'Partisans 2', the Wayne Shorter-inspired 'Wise Child') now often resembles a slowly expanding domicile, bits being added as required by the inhabitants, till only those wholly familiar with the original building can spot the resemblance.
