Trumpeter,
Quentin Collins, appeared (with Phil Robson, Tony Kofi, Michael Janisch
and Winston Clifford) at the Pizza Express.
To a sure yet brilliantly flaring tone and a quick-witted improvisational gift, Collins adds a personable stage presence, and his punchy versions of both his own tricksy pieces and the odd Monk number (plus a considered visit to Freddie Hubbard's 'Up Jumped Spring') clearly impressed a respectably sized audience.
Collins is the real deal – confident, musicianly, versatile – and is a genuine prospect, both as a composer and a gutsy, intelligent soloist.
