Basquiat Strings with Seb Rochford

A
typically large and enthusiastic F-IRE Collective-inspired audience was
clearly entranced by the month's concluding gig, from cellist Ben Davis's
improvising chamber group, the Basquiat Strings with Seb Rochford.
Surprisingly propulsive courtesy mainly of Rochford's scrupulously deft drumming (his dynamic and tonal control is simply faultless, whether he's employing muffled malleted sounds or interspersing delicate rimshots with ticking cymbals), Davis's music proved even more beguiling in a live setting than it does on Basquiat Strings' excellent album (see CD reviews), and provided yet another argument for abandoning attempts to assign such projects to categories such as 'classical/jazz' or even 'third-stream'; this was simply great, original music that drew infectiously enthusiastic performances from all involved – a memorable gig.
