The
odd Tyner influence is apparent in Mseleku's piano playing, but instead
of cascades and torrents, the South African spins shorter lines (freshets,
if you will) – that's enough water imagery (Ed.) – from his
solos, interspersing them with telling silences and pregnant pauses that
imbue the whole band sound with welcome tension.
Gareth Lochrane's flute playing was appropriately fluent, and surprisingly robust; he's the most accomplished (UK-based) practitioner on his instrument I've heard since Eddie Parker burst on to the scene in the 1980s, adept at unhesitatingly producing utterly convincing solos from the most tricksy of chord sequences.
With Winston Clifford majestically confident on drums, this was a thoroughly absorbing night's entertainment in front of a capacity crowd. It also, from a listener's point of view at least, underlined the wisdom of (The Vortex) investing in a top-class piano.
