Another
buzz, of a slightly more restrained order, preceded the Sunday-evening
gig by the Gwilym Simcock Trio.
Concentrating on his own compositions, which combine an almost Jarrett-like legato mellifluousness with punctuating bursts of percussive playing, Simcock, shadowed tastefully but assertively by bassist Phil Donkin and drummer Martin France, demonstrated not only the luminous delicacy and scrupulous attention to notes' weight and precise articulation that used to be considered the defining characteristic of 'classical' players (not any more – but let's not be distracted by that particular hare), but also the improvisational fecundity and rhythmic energy associated with jazz.
Concluding his first set with a tricksily rearranged 'The Way You Look Tonight', Simcock, with this delightful gig, considerably enhanced his reputation as a UK piano star in the making.
