Tyner is the most obvious influence on John Donaldson
(John Fordham has described him as 'Tyner with the volume turned down'),
and for his trio's gig, especially on his opening Bobby Timmons number,
'Dis Here', he did indulge in cascading runs spun off crashing percussive
effects in the style of the great man.
For the rest of his set, however, he showcased his individual strengths: an improvisational fecundity that relies on subtle rhythmic and melodic shifts, a luminous delicacy on ballad material, and a stunning rapport with one of the most responsive and alertly musical drummers around in the UK at present, Asaf Sirkis. With Simon Thorpe deft and propulsive as ever on bass, this was an unequivocally enjoyable set.
