Ayanna
Witter-Johnson began her gig at the piano with a florid introduction to
one of her own songs, on which she was joined by a band led by guitarist
Dave Preston, then by a three-horn section spearheaded by altoist Nathaniel
Facey.
With cello and piano at her disposal, as well as a strong, vibrant, flexible voice, Ayanna W-J has a great deal going for her; she occasionally tends to over-embellish her songs so that the lyrics become difficult to distinguish, but this reservation aside, she has talent in abundance, plus an engaging stage manner, so shouldn't have to struggle too hard to establish herself on a somewhat overcrowded scene.
Her original material is individual enough to be striking, and her solo (cello-backed) visit to the oddly Gladstonian Police anthem 'Roxanne' hints at a refreshingly singular attitude to 'covers'.
