'The
FatCat Organ Trio (guitarist Dave Preston, keyboard player Kit Downes,
drummer Josh Morrison) were billed as 'inspired by the great organ trios',
which conjured up expectations of bluesy, barrelling music harking back
to Blue Note's heyday; in the event, they proved to be a great deal subtler
and more varied in their repertoire than the tag suggested.
True, they began with a vigorous, accessible workout that sounded like a period classic but which turned out to be from Downes's pen; they then showed their versatility with a plangent Preston composition that saw Downes operating on piano, turning in a delightfully mellifluous solo before reverting to Hammond to accompany Preston's typically cogent, fluent but spiky improvisation.
Leavening their richly varied originals with a wonderfully inventive, thoroughly rejigged version of Monk's 'Bemsha Swing' featuring guest tenorman Tom Challenger, the FatCats not only address the possibilities of organ trios with imagination and brio, they also clearly enjoy playing together, their enthusiasm for each other's contributions infectious. A treat, in short.
