''A
wonderful opportunity to experience the full range of an extraordinary
musical talent' was how the gig by drummer/pianist Gary Husband was billed
in my preview; the event saw him begin proceedings by playing solo versions
of pieces by John McLaughlin and Allan Holdsworth, dramatic, florid but
consistently musicianly reinventions/extemporisations based on Mahavishnu
Orchestra/Shakti pieces, culminating in a visit to Holdsworth that roused
a largeish crowd to cheering.
The second half of the concert was devoted to a new Husband band, Drive, featuring Julian Siegel on tenor, trumpeter Richard Turner and bassist Michael Janisch. Playing mostly Husband material (although Siegel did contribute a number), the quartet more than lived up to its name, propulsion coming not only from Husband's peerless bristling drums (Billy Cobham the obvious reference point) and Janisch's full-bodied, vigorous bass, but also from the terse soloing of Siegel and the flaring fluency of Turner, a real prospect given his youthfulness.
