The
Geoff Gascoyne Quintet is another band to watch if you're interested in
jazz's younger generation – past members include Ben Castle and
Jim Watson before they truly established themselves – but on this
occasion only tenor player Tom Richards was relatively unfamiliar, the
other members – trumpeter Martin Shaw, drummer Sebastiaan De Krom,
pianist Tom Cawley, bassist Gascoyne himself – all pretty well known.
The band's material is jaunty, occasionally tricksy but consistently vigorous and lively, and the warm humour of Gascoyne himself is always a plus, especially useful on this occasion, where he had to wrestle (unsuccessfully) with feedback problems that eventually resulted in his having the PA turned off altogether.
Gascoyne is a class act, equally adept at arranging standards for singers (he is married to Trudy Kerr) as at acting as Jamie Cullum's musical linchpin, but his composing/bandleading skills are still somewhat undersung; on the sparky, thoroughly entertaining but musicianly evidence provided by this particular band, this is somewhat mysterious.
