June 2007 gig reviews by Chris Parker
After the customary intimate evening (Saturday, 2) with Ian Shaw and guitarist Dave Preston (plus assorted surprise guests such as Lea DeLaria, assembled to celebrate the UK singer's 45th birthday), it was initially a little odd to see the band the London Jazz Orchestra the following night overflowing from the stage on to the floor of the club.
Scott Stroman (MD, composer) and co-leader, trumpeter Noel Langley, were regular visitors with this big band to the Old Vortex, playing monthly gigs there, but had yet to perform at the new premises.
Past bandmembers include Stan Sulzmann and Henry Lowther, and their compositions form part of the LJO's current repertoire, fleshed out with Stroman material, but it is the chance the band gives to relatively fresh players on the London scene, such as tenorman Tom Challenger and trumpeter Percy Pursglove, to negotiate the intricacies of big-band music under the appreciatively watchful eyes of the likes of long-time members Pete Hurt (one of the most underrated saxophonists in the UK) and Martin Hathaway that makes the band such a valuable resource.
