A
rather disappointing (in size at least – perhaps Arsenal were to
blame) audience greeted Gee, Gallo, Minetto.
Absentees missed a real treat: Gee is not only a wonderfully gutsy yet fluent pianist, but also a strong group player, striking sparks off a fiercely energetic rhythm section that clearly revelled in their interaction with him.
Gee's interest in snooker I would imagine – given the drama imbuing his composition 'Black' – comes more from watching the likes of the Mozart of the Green Baize, Ronnie O'Sullivan, than from 'Grinder' Thorburn or 'Interesting' Steve Davis; his Monkish excursions (including an adventurously crooned 'Round Midnight' and an extended blues jam that gave rise to a powerfully virtuosic drum solo from Alessandro Minetto) were appropriately pithy and cogent; his stage presentation pleasingly informal yet involving – all in all, this was a classy performance from three great musicians in perfect accord.
