May 2007 gig reviews by Chris Parker

Christine Tobin

Saturday 19 May

I must have seen Christine Tobin perform a couple of dozen times, at least, over the years, but seldom have I seen her more relaxed than on this occasion.

With Kate Shortt guesting on cello and drummer Simon Lea unavoidably absent, Tobin began her gig with material by two of her favourite songwriters: Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen.

The former's 'The Priest' (from Ladies of the Canyon) was taken at a driving pace, the latter's 'Everybody Knows' (from I'm Your Man), beautifully embellished by a Shortt solo, at an altogether slinkier one, but what was really impressive was the sheer intelligence and sensitivity on display; as with the greatest 'cover' version of all time, Jimi Hendrix's astonishing reworking of 'All Along the Watchtower'.

These songs clearly touched a deep chord in Tobin that still resonates in her performances of them all these years later. As both an original songwriter and an interpreter of other people's material, Tobin has few contemporary peers; her next album (in the planning stages as yet) is eagerly awaited.
