Williams/Greens/Speake

The pre-gig build-up for the Williams/Greens/Speake Quartet concentrated on two selling points: the band comprised '(almost) four different generations' and would explore 'old, rarely played standards'.
In the event bassist Dave Green muddled the dates and was consequently double-booked for the evening; the band's ability to address the promised recherché material was, as a result, severely compromised, and so the gig became a (perfectly competent but generally unremarkable) run-through of more familiar standards that undeniably brought characteristically polished, thoughtful performances from altoist Martin Speake and drummer Jeff Williams in particular, but which never quite recovered from not doing what it said on the tin.
