'One
of the capital's most exciting jazz prospects' was how alto player Zhenya
Strigalev was promoted, and his quartet gig was not a disappointment;
he's in complete command of his instrument, a composer of unpretentious,
immediately accessible, bright but funky tunes, and – most importantly
for his live act – an irrepressible soloist.
Sharing solo duties with the intelligently clangorous pianist Tom Cawley, Strigalev demonstrated a declamatory, almost stridently vigorous, but subtly textured approach to soloing and a warm stage manner; he's a welcome and valuable addition to the London jazz community.
