November gig reviews by Chris Parker
Evan
Parker plays regularly at the club, usually with bassist John Edwards
and drummer Tony Marsh, but on this occasion (Wednesday 14) he appeared
with a couple of old sparring partners, bassist Barry Guy and drummer
Paul Lytton, and an American guest, trumpeter Peter Evans.
The club was packed to capacity, but the silence signified the sort of rapt attentiveness that presages great music, and the quartet did not disappoint: with Parker operating on tenor and Evans on both conventional and pocket trumpet (muted and open), the tone colours available to the band were many and varied, encompassing everything from buzzing urgency (aided by Guy's strident arco work) to hushed murmuring; from thunderous thrash to the quietest whisper and all points in between.
Riding easily on Lytton's rolling, sensitive drums and Guy's spell-binding bass, Parker and Evans produced a seamless improvised conversation, intimate yet fierce and vigorous; this was free improvisation of the first water from four masters of the craft.
