November gig reviews by Chris Parker
Porpoise Corpus launched their eponymous debut album (see CD reviews) to a gratifyingly large audience liberally sprinkled with jazz commentators, movers and shakers, so it's clear there is (as with many of the F-IRE and Loop Collective bands) a buzz abroad about them.
The music they play (see CD Reviews) is a lively and accessible mix of straightahead jazz, earthy fusion and a dash of freeish playing, spearheaded by a twin-saxophone/guitar front line and driven by an accomplished rhythm section: Spencer Brown's lithe bass and Guy Wood's pleasantly rackety drumming; its success can be attributed mainly to the skilful compositions of leader/pianist David O'Brien, which, while complex enough to engage and sustain attention, are none the less accommodating to uninhibited soloing from saxophonists Tom Challenger and Tom Ward and the delicate yet powerful guitarist Jonathan Bratoeff. Another band to watch.
