Christine
Tobin, accompanied by a somewhat augmented line-up (usual bandmembers
percussionist Thebe Lipere, guitarist Phil Robson, bassist Dave Whitford
and drummer Simon Lea joined by pianist Liam Noble), aired a number of
new songs (to me, at any rate), judiciously interspersed with some old
favourites (her intriguing arrangements of Leonard Cohen's 'Everybody
Knows', Bob Dylan's 'All I Really Want to Do' and cogent originals taken
from her numerous Babel albums).
There are few better ways of spending an evening than sitting in what is clearly Tobin's home from home listening, as part of a rapt, but rousingly supportive audience, to one of the strongest yet most beguilingly sensitive voices on the current scene.
Tobin manages to combine an intelligent alertness to lyrics' meaning and emotional weight with a robust, flexible yet often swooningly lovely vocal style, all delivered via an informal but musicianly stage presence. A new album is eagerly anticipated.
