The
Lucien Dubuis Crossover Trio were billed as 'simultaneously modern and
primitive í a chromosomic mingling of John Coltrane and the DNA of the
Beastie Boys'; in the event their thrashing trio interaction on relatively
straightforward, thumpingly accessible themes owed more to the so-called
'punk' jazz of the 1980s than to either of the above-named acts.
On alto, Dubuis demonstrated an infectiously enjoyable mastery of a range of sounds, from squeals and honks to declamatory urgency; on contrabass clarinet he was a little more restrained, often restricting himself to a rhythm-section role behind Roman Nowka's guitar, meshing with Lionel Friedli's alternately crashing and tumbling drums to provide an eccentric funkiness that could be readily adjusted to accommodate the more jazz-tinged compositions such as Nowka's set-closing 'You're Awesome', a rickety-sounding, almost fairground-like theme.
Those intrigued by this description should get hold of the trio's Unit Records album, Le Retour, which touches all the above bases and even manages to misspell Emily Bronte's name – how did she get in there?
