Trio VD Æ Chrises Sharkey (guitar), de Bezenac (alto) and Bussey (drums) Æ last played at the Vortex in February, and created quite a buzz with their viscerally exciting mix of free jazz, rock/street beats and electronic noise.
They've been described as 'Tim Berne meets Queens of the Stone Age at a party thrown by Derek Bailey', and Æ although perhaps System of a Down might be substituted for Queens of the Stone Age Æ this is a pretty neat summary of what they sound like.
Bussey flails and tumbles like a mixture of Animal from The Muppet Show and Keith Moon; Sharkey alternates ground-out crashing chords with cheeps, rumbles and other electronic noise; de Bezenac shrieks, wails, lip-smacks and occasionally even plays snatches of melody.
Sharkey joined Pete Wareham (baritone, tenor and electronics), Ruth Goller (electric bass) and Leo Taylor (drums) for the night's second set, the first ever gig by Final Terror.
Wareham's
baritone was used mainly to set up an underlying riff, which was then repeated
via a loop, over which the saxophonist would then either solo or interject
little snatches of tenor or electronica.
Goller drove things along with her big bass sound, and with Taylor pounding away and Sharkey providing textural variety, they produced enough sonic mayhem to more than justify their name; once they've ironed out the occasional glitch with the co-ordination of their various electronic gizmos, they'll be a force to be reckoned with.
