The
late lamented Richard Cook, in his Jazz Encyclopedia (Penguin,
2005), comments that US bassist David Friesen's music 'tends to reside
in the dreamier climes he seems fondest of ¯ although he can play demanding
straightahead music when he wants to'.
On this occasion, joined by pianist Barry Green and altoist Martin Hathaway, he concentrated on his own compositions ä a couple of ten-bar blues, the odd ballad dedicated to his grandson, vigorous but pleasingly tricksy pieces accommodating solo rounds ä in the latter vein, and revealed in the process not only a talent for composing subtle but gutsy pieces capable of drawing out the considerable soloing skills of his collaborators but also an ability to produce an affecting, sonorous tone from his own instrument.
Hathaway has an attractively keening alto sound, agile yet hardening where required into stridency; Green, versatile as ever, moved easily between the lyrical and the pungent ä overall, this was an informal but musicianly performance from a vigorously interactive trio whose respect for each other's talents was almost palpable.
