Having
guested on saxophonist Carlos Lopez-Real's debut album, singer Fini Bearman
has now formed a band with him, building on the rapport that clearly exists
between his pure-toned saxophone sound and her agile, light but strong
voice.
Their material is relatively ambitious, comprised of in-band originals, some sparked by poetry (one such piece, 'Prayer' written by Carol Ann Duffy, concluded with a portion of the Shipping Forecast), and the odd piece by other contemporary composers (John McLaughlin's 'Someone' – from James Taylor's One Man Dog – a particular highlight), but all skilfully selected to showcase said rapport.
This is best exemplified in passages during which instrument and voice blend in close harmony, or intertwine in baroque ornamentation, either literally or in the frequent bursts of wordless vocals that form the meat of many of their jazz-based collaborations, and – skilfully supported as they are by bassist Dave Manington and drummer Josh Morris – this is a musical partnership that, given a chance to develop and grow in assurance as a consequence, promises much.
