March 2008 gig reviews by Chris Parker
With a four-horn front line (tenor, alto, trumpet, trombone) and the leader driving proceedings with his vigorous but melodic bass playing, the Will Collier Septet is an exuberant, punchy ensemble dispensing hard-hitting but melodic originals.
Occasionally laced with the loose, woozily joyous pep often associated with South African music, and always bright and accessible, Collier's music is punchy and direct in its ensemble statements but allows considerable scope for individual improvisation, a feature that allowed alto player Mike Lesirge and deputising tenorman James Allsopp to produce a series of absorbing, gutsy solos over the propulsive rhythm-section work of Collier, pianist Ed Sheldrake and drummer Ben Reynolds.
With brass players Bob Dowell (trombone) and Joe Auckland (trumpet) bringing solid power and bright flair respectively to the band's beguiling sound mix, this was an enjoyable and enlivening gig from an accomplished outfit.
