New Second Sunday Series: The LJO opens its 2013-14 season at the Vortex Club featuring trumpet legend Henry Lowther as composer and soloist.
This season, our 23rd anniversary season, the LJO will appear each 2nd Sunday of the month. Come and check out these up-close-and-personal sessions at London's longest jazz residency!
Directed by Scott Stroman, the London Jazz Orchestra is "as fine a band as you can find anywhere" (Independent).
Berlin based ensemble HANAM Quintet is Alison Blunt (violin), Anna Kaluza (alto sax), Manuel Miethe (soprano sax), Nikolai Meinhold (piano) and Horst Nonnenmacher (double bass).
Their collective CVs range from Sam Rivers to Alexander von Schlippenbach, Paul Bley to the London Improvisers Orchestra and Berlin Improvisers Orchestra, taking in cabaret, dance, film and theatre music along the way. HANAM's music is what happens when five close friends play music together - deep listening and risky, playful challenges.
An album of live performances is imminently to be released with Italian label AUT Records and the band are delighted to be visiting again to share their music with a London audience. "Intelligent broad canvas free improvisation to delight the imagination." John Russell.
Fumi Okiji and Pat Thomas
Pat Thomas studied classical piano from aged 8 and started playing Jazz from the age of 16. He has since gone on to develop an utterly unique style - embracing improvisation, jazz and new music. His discography exceeds 50 releases and his many notable performances include working with Derek Bailey in Company Week (1990/91), with the trio AND (with Noble), with Tony Oxley’s Quartet and Celebration Orchestra and in duo with Lol Coxhill. "Unlike other pianists whose virtuosity seems to be racing ahead of their thought processes. Thomas always seems supremely in command of his gift, and his playing, no matter how free and ready to tangle with abstraction, always carries a charge of authoritative exactitude." The Jazzmann
Fumi Okiji is a London-based singer exploring free improvisation, noted for her rich, sonorous contralto and ability to inhabit each note she sings. Her interest in improvised music was sparked in her teens by weekly workshop sessions led by trumpeter Jim Dvorak. As half of experimental duo The Man Who Laughs, Fumi recorded Deep Songs, an album of ‘industrial scrapyard, jazz-noir’ standards with the F-ire label in 2009 and is currently working with VIT (Vocal Improv Trio) led by Cleveland Watkiss. Her influences are wide and varied taking in Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Monk, Mingus, Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, Eric Dolphy, Art Ensemble of Chicago and Jeanne Lee.
