"A gorgeously hallucinatory affair. One of music’s best-kept secrets." The Guardian
Gravenhurst is the work of singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Nick Talbot. The Ghost In Daylight, his fourth full-length album for Warp Records, has been met with overwhelming praise. Critics have picked up on the album’s sophisticated themes of English mythology, political history and hidden geography, with Mojo describing "a memory-haunted journey through the dead voices and deep narratives of England’s lost – broadside ballads culled from earth and air"
A dark and atmospheric place, ever-changing and conjured from disparate ingredients, Gravenhurst’s roots lie in the melodic noise of My Bloody Valentine, the lush vocal harmonies of Simon and Garfunkel, the alchemical guitars of Richard Thompson and Johnny Marr, and the widescreen ambient visions of Brian Eno. Over the course of six startling releases, Talbot has developed and retained a unique identity across multiple genres. Talbot’s haunting and powerful voice, virtuoso guitar work, ethereal production and mysterious lyrical themes ensure that Gravenhurst is a consistent yet ever evolving sound-world, and one with a particularly fanatical cult following.
Praise for latest album The Ghost In Daylight:
"Warp’s unsung genius delivers mellow masterpiece… Gravenhurst has made an album as good as anything his revered record label has released in the last decade. Evocative of Nick Drake’s understated English melancholia and the lush, moody atmospherics of late-‘70s Brian Eno… An exquisite, unexpected gem." **** Q
"Terrific understated songs with a church-like serenity… Talbot is one of music’s best kept secrets" **** The Guardian
"Stunning" ***** Artrocker
Employing experimental techniques, lyrical gymnastics and rhythmic prestidigitation to create multi-layered, manic psych-pop compositions, Bristol’s SJ Esau is known for psyched out immersive live shows which combine stunning visual art with his catchy yet bizarre songcraft. The power is doubled on this occasion by the intense drum smashings of frequent collaborator, Sean Talbot.
Esau’s recordings have been released by such labels as Anticon Records, Twisted Nerve and Static Caravan and a new full length is scheduled for early next year.
In Gillet Square :
A one night multimedia and photography festival.
As darkness begins to fall, indoor and outdoor projections will pop up across a range of venues in Dalston, beaming out inspiring artworks for one night only.
Supporting and promoting contemporary image making, Night Contact aims to bring together exciting and innovative photographic works that provoke or engage in conversations with other media, such as film, music and literature. All of the works will embrace the projection format, through experimental edits, collaborations with other artists, and the use of sound, narrative, movement, colour and rhythm.
Centred around Gillett Square, a specially installed bank of screens will show site-specific commissioned and curated work. There will be stalls, music, food and drink, with vouchers offering deals at local bars and eateries. Beyond the main square, the festival will break out into a trail of six satellite venues, taking over the streets of Dalston across outdoor spaces, bars and music venues, each showing a programmed screening.
Join the festival after party in the Vortex with DJs, bar and extra bonuses.
