Çiğdem Aslan’s (pronounced Cheedem) debut album Mortissa is a magical journey though popular and less well-known repertoire of smyrniac rebetiko, the so-called ‘Blues of the Aegean’. Greek and Turkish songs from 1920s and 30s are brought to life in sparkling arrangements by a gorgeous new voice that is full of character and passion, evoking times past with fresh style.
"a voice and a half: typically high and pure Mediterranean tones, undercut with a no-nonsense from the heart passion." fRoots Magazine
"sultry and scintillating" Clash Magazine
"a fresh, natural and relaxed performer with a beautiful voice" Simon Broughton, Songlines Magazine
Performing with top instrumentalists from the vibrant Greek and Turkish scene in London, Aslan will enchant you and transport you to the turquoise Aegean sea, to a bustling Greek market full of wheelers and dealers, to a lively Istanbul ‘Café Aman’ and hidden-away harem, or a Turkish bandit’s hideout amongst the hills, with tales of love and loss, high hopes and broken dreams. These songs bear a strong affinity to the charming small-town world of South West Anatolia created by Louis de Bernierès in his book Birds Without Wings.
With DJs playing Greek and Turkish traditional music till late to let us take you to a typical 'Cafe Aman' Istanbul/Athens style!
