Mikołaj Trzaska / Mark Sanders Duo
Mikołaj Trzaska - saxophone, clarinet
Mark Sanders - drums
Mikołaj Trzaska saxophonist, bass clarinetist and composer, grew out of "yass" – a socio-artistic movement that in the 1980s and 90s opposed what the participants saw as the rigidity of the Polish jazz environment. Together with Tymon Tymański and a group of other musicians they changed the image of Polish jazz music. Trzaska was the co-founder of the most important yass group – "Miłość" and the similarly creative "Łoskot." He became the leader of the national improvised-music scene. After the yass period he recorded a few concentrated and quiet albums with the Oleś brothers. He also accompanied poets – Świetlicki and Andrukhovych, he created muical – literary projects with Andrzej Stasiuk.
Today he is the leader of the international quartet Inner Ear, Ircha, danish trio Volumen and a member of, among others, Riverloam Trio, with Olie Birce and Mark Sanders, Resonance of Ken Vandermark, Magic – Joe McPhee, and the Shofar trio with Raphael Rogiński and Macio Moretti – playing Jewish music.
Above all he sees himself in the mode of radical contemporary free jazz. He travels around the world cooperating with personalities of world improvisation among others with Peter Brötzmann, Joe McPhee, Ken Vandermark, Peter Friis Nielsen, Michael Zerang, Mark Sanders, Time Disy, Steve Swell, Per-Ake Holmlander, Dave Rempis, Clementine Gasser, Peter Ole Jorgensen, Franz Houtzinger, Jay Rosen, Domik Duval, He has recorded about sixty albums.
Mark Sanders described as ubiquitous, diverse and constantly creative drummer has played with many renowned musicians from around the world including Evan Parker, Peter Brotzmann, Derek Bailey, Myra Melford, Paul Rogers, Henry Grimes, Roswell Rudd, Okkyung Lee, Barry Guy, Tim Berne, Otomo Yoshihide, Ken Vandermark in duo and quartets with Wadada Leo Smith and trios with Charles Gayle with Sirone and William Parker. His new collaborative projects include `Riverloam Trio` with Mikolaj Trzaska & Olie Brice, `Asunder` with Hasse Poulsen & Paul Dunmall, duos with John Butcher and DJ Sniff, `Statics` with Georg Graewe & John Butcher and trio with Rachel Musson & Liam Noble. Mark has released over 120 cds.
Artur Majewski - trumpet, cornets, electronics
Kuba Suchar - drums, percussion, electronics
Rising from the ashes of the Polish jazz supergroup Robotobibok, drummer Kuba Suchar and trumpeter Artur Majewski, collectively known as Mikrokolektyw, have been making waves within the European music scene for the past 7 years. Known for their high energy, electronics driven acoustic jazz, the duo possess a stripped down style that has become almost impressionistic, producing complex melodies that emerge more from spontaneity than structure.
Over the years, Mikrokolektyw have enjoyed numerous live collaborations, sharing the stage with Chicago jazz heavyweights like Fred Anderson, Nicole Mitchell, and Rob Mazurek’s Exploding Star Orchestra as well as with international artists such as Matmos, Fennesz, and Sao Paulo Underground. They have also toured in Europe, America and Japan, performing at some of the world’s greatest music and arts festivals including Chicago’s World Music Festival, Krakow’s Unsound Festival, Cerkno Jazz Festival in Slovenia, and the Eurosonic Festival.
Playing at JEMP for the first time, Mikrokolektyw will kick off the 2013 programme with the UK premiere of their latest album Absent Minded. Lauded as their “boldest set so far” and “the next step in the evolution of jazz”, the performance promises to reveal a facet of jazz that is diverse and challenging yet astoundingly beautiful.
