Improviser and composer Tim Hodgkinson - of Henry Cow and Konk Pack fame - first collaborated with Denman Maroney's unique hyperpiano and Dominic Lash on contrabass in September 2011 at John Zorn's club The Stone in New York City. LondonJazz said that their second meeting was "an exhilarating stream of expressive statement ... always sharply attentive to the hints and phrasing in the air, they achieved an engaging equilibrium in their search for lost phrases and resonances". Tonight they resume their search for the third time, in the company of the remarkable percussionist Paul Lytton – collaborator with Evan Parker for over forty years and a true percussion innovator.
Lash - dbl bass
Maroney - piano
Hodgkinson - reeds & laspsteel
Lytton - drums
"Pianists have been tinkering with the guts of their instruments for nearly a century now, but it’s altogether likely that no one has explored the art of prepared piano as diligently or creatively as hyperpianist Denman Maroney." (Time Out New York) The music of "hyperpianist" Denman Maroney is inspired by nature and the music of John Cage, Ornette Coleman, Henry Cowell, Duke Ellington, Charles Ives, Scott Joplin, Olivier Messiaen, Thelonious Monk, Conlon Nancarrow and Karheinz Stockhausen among others. Maroney plays what he calls "hyperpiano", which involves bowing and sliding the strings with copper bars, steel cylinders, Tibetan prayer bowls, rubber blocks and CD cases and gives him a unique sonic vocabulary.
Born in 1949, graduate in social anthropology at Cambridge, co-founder of the politically and musically radical group Henry Cow in 1968, Tim Hodgkinson has followed a restless and critical creative path. His compositions have been interpreted in such international festivals as: Spectrum XXI (Brussels, Paris, Geneva, London), Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (U.K.) where he was a featured composer in 2007, Craiova and Ploiesti Festivals (Romania), Guarda Festival (Portugal), Cantiere Internazionale d’Arte di Montepulciano (Italy), Konfrontationen Festival (Austria), Nordlyd Festival (Norway), Musique Action (France) and the European Symposium of Experimental Music at Barcelona. As an improvising musician on reeds and lap steel guitar Tim Hodgkinson has worked all over the world with many of the most acclaimed artists in the field and continues to be fully engaged in the celebrated Konk Pack trio with Roger Turner and Thomas Lehn.
Dominic Lash has performed with Tony Conrad and Evan Parker; other currently active ensembles include a duo with Alex Ward, a trio with John Butcher and John Russell and The Convergence Quartet (with Taylor Ho Bynum, Harris Eisenstadt and Alexander Hawkins). He also leads The Set Ensemble (an experimental music group mainly devoted to the work of composers from the Wandelweiser collective). Recent CD publications include work on the Another Timbre, Cathnor, Clean Feed and Psi labels. He was resident in New York for much of 2011, where he performed with musicians including Michael Pisaro, Fay Victor and Nate Wooley.
According to Evan Parker, Paul Lytton is "happiest with the weirdest shit possible - that's where he seems to really love it." An incredibly sensitive and selfless improviser, he has collaborated recently with the likes of Ken Vandermark, C Spencer Yeh, Okkyung Lee, Agusti Fernandez and Ikue Mori, as well as being an essential interlocutor for Evan Parker for over forty years in their long standing duo, the legendary trio with Barry Guy, and with Parker's Electro-Acoustic Ensemble.
"Paul's a remarkable drummer . . . you could play ten minutes of Paul Lytton and they might think, I'm not sure if that person's ever played the drums before in his life, and then you can play another ten minutes where he sounds like Roy Haynes on speed." - Evan Parker, Paris Transatlantic
