A complete guide to events at The Vortex
A
brief introduction to the club
The Vortex is moving into the record industry this autumn, launching its own eponymous label with an album by South London's Portico Quartet.
The label will operate as an imprint of Babel, which is owned by Vortex co-director Oliver Weindling, and has put out terrific albums from the likes of Led Bib, Fraud, Polar Bear and Acoustic Ladyland.
Portico Quartet's album – 'knee deep in the north sea' – will be out in November.
The
band, (seen left with the Vortex team), comprise bass, drums, soprano
saxophone and an unusual Swiss percussion instrument called the hang.
Pictured left to right are Oliver Weindling, Jack Wyllie, Duncan Bellamy, Milo Fitzpatrick, Nick Mulvey and Will Gresford.
Remarkably refreshing and difficult to pinpoint, The Portico Quartet have been compared to Ben Allison, Esbjörn Svensson Trio and The Cinematic Orchestra.
Their approach of blurring contemporary jazz with modern classical tendencies to that of Steve Reich and Philip Glass and with African rhythms to Penguin Café Orchestra.
The music is young, exuberant and easily accessible. Appealing to fans of The Gotan Project and Zero 7, the debut album ‘Knee Deep In The North Sea' could be the common denominator in fiercely diverse musical collections.
The Quartet – who describe their music as “forging contemporary jazz with classical tendencies”, will appear at the Vortex as part of the London Jazz Festival on 20th November 2007.
