SUMMARY:Hannes Riepler
DESCRIPTION:Guitarist Hannes Riepler has made his mark on the city’s vibrant jazz scene\, not only for his outstanding\, inventive guitar skill and freewheeling energy\, but as an extraordinarily talented composer. Since moving to London from Austria via studies in Amsterdam in 2006\, and the release of his debut album The Brave (Jellymould\, 2012)\, Riepler has been working on new material. Known as the host and curator of London’s gem of a jam session at the Vortex Downstairs\, Riepler will perform his own material tonight\, showcasing some of the works to be released and toured in 2015. Riepler stylishly combines the immediacy of New York’s propulsive Downtown style with classical and folk textures.\n\n“London continues to be a magnet for foreign jazz musicians\, and one of the best is Austrian guitarist Hannes Riepler” The Daily Telegraph

SUMMARY:Evan Parker / Sten Sandell / John Edwards / Paul Lytton
DESCRIPTION:Evan Parker's monthly Vortex residency with the master of free improvisation. Tonight Parker is joined by Sten Sandell (piano)\, John Edwards (bass) and Paul Lytton (drums).\n\n‘If you’ve ever been tempted by free improvisation\, Parker is your gateway drug.’ Stewart Lee\n\nEvan Parker\n\nA major force in European improvising\, Parker has collaborated with everyone from Cecil Taylor\, Paul Bley & Anthony Braxton\, to Scott Walker\, Robert Wyatt and Squarepusher. He is one of Europe’s most innovative and intriguing saxophonists\, which is why he keeps audiences coming back for more.\n\nSten Sandell\n\nSwedish pianist Sten Sandell is one of the key figures in the Scandinavian free jazz and improvisation scene: a visionary and experienced musician who has developed a profound musical language. He is a member of the Gush trio\, with saxophonist Mats Gustafsson and drummer Raymond Strid\, celebrating this year its 20th year of activity\, and leads his own trio\, with bassist Johan Berthling and drummer Paal Nilssen-Love\, and collaborates with other innovative European improvisers as saxophonists Evan Parker and John Butcher.\n\nJohn Edwards\n\nJohn Edwards is a true virtuoso whose staggering range of techniques and boundless musical imagination have redefined the possibility of the double bass and dramatically expanded its role\, whether playing solo or with others. Perpetually in demand\, he has played with Evan Parker\, Sunny Murray\, Derek Bailey\, Joe McPhee\, Lol Coxhill\, Peter Brötzmann\, Mulatu Astatke and many others.\n\nPaul Lytton\n\nAccording to Evan Parker\, Paul Lytton is “happiest with the weirdest shit possible - that's where he seems to really love it.” One of the pioneers of European improvised music\, Lytton is a percussion innovator who radically expanded the drum kit with the introduction of amplification and electronics. An incredibly sensitive and selfless improviser\, he has collaborated recently with the likes of Ken Vandermark\, C Spencer Yeh\, Okkyung Lee\, Agusti Fernandez and Ikue Mori\, as well as being an essential interlocutor for Evan Parker for over forty years in their long standing duo\, the legendary trio with Barry Guy\, and with Parker's Electro-Acoustic Ensemble.\n\n \n\n \n\n

SUMMARY:Late Sessions: Finn Peters Curates - Prescott
DESCRIPTION:Reeds player Finn Peters curates three late night sessions at the Vortex - catch them after the evening concerts. The Independent has described Finn's music as “nothing like you have ever heard before” so expect the same from these shows!\n\nPrescott is the brainchild of former Stump bassist\, Kev Hopper\, joined by two formidable musicians: on keys Rhodri Marsden\, Scritti Politti member and indie veteran who worked on Kev’s 2001 album “Saurus”; on drums is Frank Byng [Snorkel\, Crackle].\n\nFunky beats and discordant riffs? Simple themes played a semitone apart? There are plenty of art-rock precedents; Palais Schaumberg\, Can\, Soft Machine and The Residents to name but a few. Prescott serve up their own\, discrete take on the genre with their first recording\, 'One Did' on Slowfoot Records.\n\n"Prescott make music that is hilarious as it is infuriating." The Wire\n\n"Best band in the world...ever!" John Prescott\n\nFinn Peters is one of the leading and most exciting flute and sax players in the UK today. A musician born and bred\, his explorative nature has lead him to work with such pioneers as Frederick Rzewski\, Bill Frisell\, DJ Spinna\, Sam Rivers and Sa-Ra creative partners\, to name a few.
