SUMMARY:Late Sessions: Finn Peters Curates - Prescott
DESCRIPTION:Reeds player Finn Peters curates three late night sessions at the Vortex - catch them after the evening concerts. The Independent has described Finn's music as “nothing like you have ever heard before” so expect the same from these shows!\n\nPrescott is the brainchild of former Stump bassist\, Kev Hopper\, joined by two formidable musicians: on keys Rhodri Marsden\, Scritti Politti member and indie veteran who worked on Kev’s 2001 album “Saurus”; on drums is Frank Byng [Snorkel\, Crackle].\n\nFunky beats and discordant riffs? Simple themes played a semitone apart? There are plenty of art-rock precedents; Palais Schaumberg\, Can\, Soft Machine and The Residents to name but a few. Prescott serve up their own\, discrete take on the genre with their first recording\, 'One Did' on Slowfoot Records.\n\n"Prescott make music that is hilarious as it is infuriating." The Wire\n\n"Best band in the world...ever!" John Prescott\n\nFinn Peters is one of the leading and most exciting flute and sax players in the UK today. A musician born and bred\, his explorative nature has lead him to work with such pioneers as Frederick Rzewski\, Bill Frisell\, DJ Spinna\, Sam Rivers and Sa-Ra creative partners\, to name a few. This same thirst for discovery has taken him around the world and has led him to set up his own imprint\, Mantella Records\, releasing 7 albums plus numerous 12"s\, EPs and remixes.\n\n"the blazing definition of a seriously heavy player" Straight No Chaser\n\n"head and shoulders above his peers." Jazzwise\n\nMidnight til 2am

SUMMARY:Partisans
DESCRIPTION:A very special show\, celebrating the release of their new album 'Swamp' on Whirlwind records.\n\n“Godfathers of the ferocious UK ‘post-jazz’ groups.” The Times\n\nPhil Robson - Guitar\nJulian Siegel - Saxes and Clarinets\nThaddeus Kelly - Bass\nMark Mondesir - Drums\n\nSince their formation in 1996 Partisans has been thrilling audiences the world over with their ferociously energetic performances of tightly knit themes and the great freedom coming from their years of playing together. Partisans are a real band – known for bridging the gap between New York swing\, European improv and UK jam – where the combination of each member’s influences feeds a genuine creative spark generating huge excitement and energy.\n\nPartisans cook up a trademark shot of gritty be-bop mashed with hard bop\, early electric Miles\, ballads with sustained delicacy\, rock riffs mixed with P-Funk grooves and with fresh departures into electronica.  The richly lyrical and strongly melodic compositions provide the framework and starting point\, underpinned by the rock solid\, freewheeling and supercharged rhythm section.\n\nFollowing a tour of the USA and Canada September 2014 saw the release of Partisans fifth studio album 'Swamp' on the Whirlwind Recordings imprint. This new album is deeply rooted in the Partisan trademark vibe and sound\, but completely blows open their already eclectic and unpredictable palette\, taking their music to new heights.\n\n“Partisans always sounds like the regular confederacy it’s been since 1996 – the tricky zigzagging heads are played with flawless attack\, and the quartet’s trademark quality of seamless idiom and time-shifting within each piece operates with a gleeful tautness.” – The Guardian\n\n“Restless\, almost reckless energy… delirious listening… consistently thrilling.”\n\n- BBC Music Magazine\n\n“Partisans present some of the most refreshing music I’ve heard in a long while\, uncompromising\, very well written and very well played.”  Steve Swallow
