SUMMARY:Thelonious
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHans Koller (valve trombone)\, Martin Speake (alto saxophone)\, Calum Gourlay (bass)\, Dave Dyson (drums)\n\nTaking inspiration from the Steve Lacy/Roswell Rudd School Days band from the early 1960s\, Thelonious explore the entire Monk repertoire with both childlike curiosity as well as forensic attention to detail.Through collective learning of Monk’s unique catalogue of 70 tunes from the complete original recordings in a slow process lasting several months of regular playing\, probing\, rehearsing\, reflecting\, memorising\, meditating\, internalising and improvising\, Theloniousarrive at flexible interpretations of the material that are as dangerous as anything in contemporary music\, as well as comforting\, groovy and dreamy.Martin has worked extensively with Monk alumnus Paul Motian (Check out Martin’s ECM recording with him\, Change of Heart)\, and Hans has played and recorded with the original Monk repertoire guru Steve Lacy (London Ear). Calum and David are two of the most melodic and cutting-edge rhythm players active on the London jazz scene today\, perfects partners in the exploration of Monk’s music.\nThelonious are delighted to be playing the Vortex downstairs Cafe every second Sunday in the month after the London Jazz Orchestra\, from 6pm to 8pm. FREE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Led Bib
DESCRIPTION:Mercury nominated Led Bib returns to the Vortex\, almost exactly 10 years since they did the very first concert in our Dalston club. This is their first London gig since November\, and likely to be their ONLY London gig till late 2015.\n\nLed Bib are one of the original torch bearers for the revitalized young British jazz scene. The Mercury Prize nominated rock-jazzers celebrate their 10 year anniversary this year with two record releases in April and an extensive European tour. Looking back on a decade of music that takes in seven albums and a string of accolades\, acclaim and performances\, the band can feel safe in the knowledge that they punched through genre barriers to carry the flag for UK progressive music.\n\n“Led Bib’s strongest album to date and one which shows the full breadth of their vision and abilities.” Londonjazz\n\n“A near flawless blend of instantly memorable composed tunes and the kind of wild improvisation-informed ‘out’ sections that only really falls into place when a band has an extensive history of live performances to draw upon.” The Quietus\n\nPlease note there is unreserved seating for this gig\, and limited seating.
