SUMMARY:London Jazz Orchestra: Kenny Wheeler's Windmill Tilter
DESCRIPTION: \n\n\nRecorded in 1968 by the John Dankworth Orchestra\, Kenny Wheeler’s suite Windmill Tilter is recognized as a landmark in the history of big band writing. Impressed by the originality of the arrangements Wheeler had been providing for his band\, Dankworth commissioned him to write a suite\, generously putting the orchestra at his disposal. Loosely based on the adventures of Don Quixote\, the successful result propelled Wheeler to international recognition as a composer and performer.\nKenny Wheeler\, who died last year\, was a founding member of the LJO\, as was trumpeter Henry Lowther\, who played on the original recording of Windmill Tilter.  In this season-ending special concert Lowther and Robbie Robson will share Wheeler's original solo role.\n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\n \n\nDirected by Scott Stroman\, the London Jazz Orchestra is “as fine a band as you can find anywhere” (Independent) and these up-close-and-personal sessions showcase great writing and soloing from a band that includes many of London’s top musicians\, as well as new talents. On this occasion they are joined by special guest vocalist Brigitte Beraha.

DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHans Koller (valve trombone)\, Martin Speake (alto saxophone)\, Calum Gourlay (bass)\, Dave Dyson (drums)\n\nTaking inspiration from the Steve Lacy/Roswell Rudd School Days band from the early 1960s\, Thelonious explore the entire Monk repertoire with both childlike curiosity as well as forensic attention to detail.Through collective learning of Monk’s unique catalogue of 70 tunes from the complete original recordings in a slow process lasting several months of regular playing\, probing\, rehearsing\, reflecting\, memorising\, meditating\, internalising and improvising\, Theloniousarrive at flexible interpretations of the material that are as dangerous as anything in contemporary music\, as well as comforting\, groovy and dreamy.Martin has worked extensively with Monk alumnus Paul Motian (Check out Martin’s ECM recording with him\, Change of Heart)\, and Hans has played and recorded with the original Monk repertoire guru Steve Lacy (London Ear). Calum and David are two of the most melodic and cutting-edge rhythm players active on the London jazz scene today\, perfects partners in the exploration of Monk’s music.\nThelonious are delighted to be playing the Vortex downstairs Cafe every second Sunday in the month after the London Jazz Orchestra\, from 6pm to 8pm.
