DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHans Koller (valve trombone)\, Martin Speake (alto saxophone)\, Calum Gourlay (bass)\, Dave Dyson (drums)\n\nTaking inspiration from the Steve Lacy/Roswell Rudd School Days band from the early 1960s\, Thelonious explore the entire Monk repertoire with both childlike curiosity as well as forensic attention to detail.Through collective learning of Monk’s unique catalogue of 70 tunes from the complete original recordings in a slow process lasting several months of regular playing\, probing\, rehearsing\, reflecting\, memorising\, meditating\, internalising and improvising\, Theloniousarrive at flexible interpretations of the material that are as dangerous as anything in contemporary music\, as well as comforting\, groovy and dreamy.Martin has worked extensively with Monk alumnus Paul Motian (Check out Martin’s ECM recording with him\, Change of Heart)\, and Hans has played and recorded with the original Monk repertoire guru Steve Lacy (London Ear). Calum and David are two of the most melodic and cutting-edge rhythm players active on the London jazz scene today\, perfects partners in the exploration of Monk’s music.\nThelonious are delighted to be playing the Vortex downstairs Cafe every second Sunday in the month after the London Jazz Orchestra\, from 6pm to 8pm. DESCRIPTION:Followed by Thirteen consists of compositions and arrangements of bassist Henrik Jensen.\n\nAmerican trumpeter Andre Canniere is a rising star on the European jazz scene. As well as playing with such luminaries as Maria Schneider\, Bjorkestra\, Ted Poor and Darcy James Argue Canniere’s debut album from 2012 was hailed as “beautifully balanced” and “exhilarating” in its five star review by The Guardian. Danish pianist Esben Tjalve’s delicate playing compliments Jensen’s compositions with such taste\, and underpinning the whole band with his sensitive\, unobtrusive dexterity is British drummer Peter Ibbetson who is becoming a favourite amongst leaders on the healthy London scene.\n\nJensen himself has spent the last five years recording and touring the world with the vocal trio The Puppini Sisters but he has also been laying the bass lines down with artists including\, Pete Wareham\, Elizabeth Shepherd\, Martin Speake \, Peter Ehwald\, Billy Jenkins\, Arthur Lea and Will Butterworth. However\, it is this group where Henrik’s musical focus really lies.\n\nQualia is a collection of compositions that are thoughtful\, playful\, bursting with energy\, at times melancholic and there is space in the arrangements\, room for each member of the quartet to express themselves.
