DESCRIPTION:Hans Koller (valve trombone)\, Martin Speake (alto saxophone)\, Calum Gourlay (bass)\, Dave Dyson (drums)\n\nTaking inspiration from the Steve Lacy/Roswell Rudd School Days band from the early 1960s\, Thelonious explore the entire Monk repertoire with both childlike curiosity as well as forensic attention to detail.Through collective learning of Monk’s unique catalogue of 70 tunes from the complete original recordings in a slow process lasting several months of regular playing\, probing\, rehearsing\, reflecting\, memorising\, meditating\, internalising and improvising\, Theloniousarrive at flexible interpretations of the material that are as dangerous as anything in contemporary music\, as well as comforting\, groovy and dreamy.Martin has worked extensively with Monk alumnus Paul Motian (Check out Martin’s ECM recording with him\, Change of Heart)\, and Hans has played and recorded with the original Monk repertoire guru Steve Lacy (London Ear). Calum and David are two of the most melodic and cutting-edge rhythm players active on the London jazz scene today\, perfects partners in the exploration of Monk’s music.\nThelonious are delighted to be playing the Vortex downstairs Cafe every second Sunday in the month after the London Jazz Orchestra\, from 6pm to 8pm.

DESCRIPTION:A stunning line-up for 2 nights at the Vortex\n\n \n\nAaron Parks (pianist)\n\nMatt Garrison (bass)\n\nEric Harland (drums)\n\nZenya Strigalev (sax)\nThe December tour of Zhenya Strigalev will be presenting his new project "NEVER GROUP!" and the new album. It will be all new original music of Zhenya. The album was recorded during two days in Berlin in Trio with Tim Lefebvre and Eric Harland and its due to be released in March 2016. "NEVER GROUP!" is a departure from Zhenya's last project\, ''Smiling Organizm''\, demonstrating musical sides which have never before been exposed. There are lots of "jam" moments which often start from the original Zhenya's tune and then turn into some totally different. The are also some rhythmical structures that were not developed on Zhenya's previous albums as well as using some extra devices (like pedals on bass guitar and some post production). There is more freedom for each band member to create and improvise.\n\nHere is the little teaser of the new album (very unaccurate one. there 21 pieces on the album): https://soundcloud.com/zhenya-strigalev/trio-trio-demo\n\nThe tonight's line up features one of most in demand pianist Aaron Parks\, bass guitarist Matt Garrison and Eric Harland on drums.
