SUMMARY:Toward the Edge - Chris Dowding; Sylvia Hallett/Clive Bell; Arthur..
DESCRIPTION:Chris Dowding\n\n Chris Dowding is the trumpeter and flugelhorn player now based in Norwich. He plays with the bands Natural Causes\, Rude 2.0 (with the trombonist Annie Whitehead)\, and leads the Moonrise Trio.\n\nChris played flugelhorn for the Opera North production 'Songs at a Years End'. This was a song-cycle composed by Hugh Nankivell\, with words by poet Ian McMillan. Chris also leads workshops\, including work with Spitalfields Music\, Dartington\, and currently with the Norwich-based charity Musical Keys.\n\nTonight Chris will play a solo improvised set with trumpet and electronics.\n\n The Geographers\n\nThe Geographers are the improvising duo of Clive Bell and Sylvia Hallett. Both well-known in the world of free improvisation\, and both multi-instrumentalists\, their album was described by the BBC website as being "filled with the sounds and textures of a hardcore ethnographic field recording\, but delivered with the vocabulary of free improvisation".\n\nTheir various instruments include shakuhachi\, violin\, stereo goathorns\, voice\, khene and the bicycle wheel. Between them Clive and Sylvia have performed with Jah Wobble\, Evan Parker\, David Sylvian and Alasdair Roberts. Sylvia has collaborated with various dance and theatre companies\, and Clive also writes for The Wire magazine.\n\nTonight The Geographers will play a completely improvised set of music.\n\n Arthur\n\nArthur are a new radical jazz trio of saxophone\, tuba and drums\, from Norwich.\n\nInitially inspired by the saxophonist Arthur Blythe's trio of the same line-up\, Arthur now perform original compositions\, more obscure standards\, and improvisations\, with passion and energy.\n\nThey are: Simon Youngman (alto saxophone)\, Ben Higham (tuba) and Geoff Charlton (drums).\n\n
