SUMMARY:Muhammad Ali tribute day (as part of Rio In Dalston)
DESCRIPTION:In the 1960 Rome Olympics\, the world was introduced to one Cassius Clay: an 18 year-old boxer with the charisma to win over the crowds\, and the talent to win Gold in the men’s light heavyweight boxing.\n\nFew could have imagined what lay ahead for the man who renamed himself Muhammad Ali\, and earned his self-proclaimed title 'The Greatest'. We’re marking the occasion of the men’s light heavyweight final at this year’s Rio Olympics with an eclectic celebration of self-expression and Ali's life\, brought together by the community as part of the Rio in Dalston Summer series.\n\nActivities hosted by The Vortex will open onto Gillett Square\, including:\n\n- From 1pm: Screening of the Rio Olympics\n\n- 3.30pm: Steel Pan workshop from Newham Steel Band\n\n- 5.30pm: DJ Jacko (from El Dica Records)\n\n- 6pm: Q+A with Ali’s friend and photographer\, Christina Jansen\n\n- 6.30pm: Poetry + boxing demo with English Boxing champ Ohara Davies\n\n- 6.50 - 7.15pm: Screening of short film Marabout from local director Alessane Sy\, including Q+A\n\n- 7.20pm: Screening of Light Heavyweight Final\n\n- 7.50pm: Charity auction of Muhammad Ali photo\, signed by Christina Jansen\n\n- 8pm: DJ Jacko from Bradbury Street's Eldica Records\, with screenings of the Olympic Games\n\n- 10.30pm til late: Closing party and Olympic screenings\n\nTimings are subject to change - especially if Nicola Adams makes it to the semi-finals!\n\nPlease note: the music will not disrupt the gig upstairs.
