SUMMARY:Vayamanikal (Kit Downes\, Tom Challenger) + Ingebjørg Loe Bjørnstad
DESCRIPTION:\n\nTheir first album was recorded over 3 days in the summer of 2012 in Huddersfield University’s St Paul's Church (a space renowned for its acoustic qualities)\, and is a selection of some of the music developed in residency. What emerged was an innovative yet melodic collection of improvised pieces that house sharply contrasting dynamics\, microtonal nuances\, and improvisational rapport that constantly engages and surprises.\n\n\n\n\n\nSince the album\, they have gone on to perform at the Royal Festival Hall (as part of the 'Pull Out the Stops' Festival - welcoming the return of the newly-refurbished organ)\, Cafe Oto (as part of 'Klammer Klang')\, The London Contemporary Music Festival 2014\, Cologne Philharmonie\, Swaledale Music Festival - as well as several live broadcasts for the BBC.\nFrom October 2014-October 2015 they were part of Aldeburgh Music's 'Open Space' residency programme - a project that saw them travel to different local churches in Suffolk\, investigating the differing acoustics and different organs (often in various states of disrepair) that they found\, all documented in an album recording\, their second album as a duo - 'Vyamanikal'. This project finished with a concert in Aldeburgh Music Festival in 2016\, as well as Manchester Jazz Festival\, London Jazz Festival and Marsden Festival. They are now working together with ECM\, the University of Kent and Stavanger Concert Hall on various collaborations through 2017.\nFor this evening\, they will be joined by the incredible and unique Norwegian vocalist and composer Ingebjørg Loe Bjørnstad\, who will perform solo and join Vyamanikal for the second set.*\nhttps://youtu.be/Pgf9czOeaUE\n\n\n"Enticingly strange and wonderful sounds\, so odd you can hardly believe it’s an organ making them" - Ivan Hewett\, The Telegraph\, 2014\n\n\n\n\n\n"Downes and Challenger are onto something here and it goes beyond niche or novelty. Wedding Music deserves a spot near the top of this year's best" - Karl Ackermann\, All About Jazz\, 2013\nFeatured in 'JAZZWISE TOP ALBUMS OF THE YEAR 2016\n- See more at: https://www.kitdownes.com/Projects/Vyamanikal\nFor this evening\, they will be joined by the incredible and unique Norwegian vocalist and composer Ingebjørg Loe Bjørnstad\, who will perform solo and join Vyamanikal for the second set.*\nhttps://youtu.be/kAH-sKj3tT8\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Klaus Bru - Alone * Together
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGerman C-Melody saxophonist Klaus Bru\, still fresh on the London scene\, has been known so far for his collaborations in the Improv Scene and the London Improvisers Orchestra. For this concert however\, he has gathered a band of great musicians to showcase his talents as a composer.\n\nWhat to expect? Jazz\, yes\, but jazz at its most elastic definition\, drawing from all sorts of sources: Swing and Hardbop\, cinematic music\, folk music (especially of the Balkan and Turkish kind)\, Free improv\, abstract sounds and sonic excusions which often resemble more an over-driven electric guitar than a good old-fashioned saxophone.\n\nKlaus Bru - C-Melody Saxophone\, Flute\nOrphy Robinson - Vibes & other instruments\nMichael de Souza - Guitar\nThodoris Ziarkas - Double Bass\nPhelan Burgoyne - Drums\n\nKlaus Bru\, originally from Southern Germany\, has been living in Vienna\, Berlin\, Taipei\, with short stints in New York and Beijing. He has played everything from Classical Music to Abstract Noise. The list of his collaborators is long\, here just a few: Marc Ribot\, Sunny Murray\, Anthony Coleman\, Jojo Mayer\, David Friesen\, Jianhong Li\, Daiguo Li\, Yan Jun\, and recently in London with musicians like Cleveland Watkiss\, Orphy Robinson\, Terry Day\, Beibei Wang\, Pat Thomas\, Kate Shortt\, and groups as diverse as White Flower\, Formation\, or the London Improvisers Orchestra.\n\nNo need to introduce Orphy Robinson\, a musician with an enormous list of collaborators in all walks of musical life\, and an open mind to all kinds of music.\n\nMichael de Souza is a prolific composer\, member of the young band Big Bad Wolf\, and leader of his own quintet featuring some of the young talents in British jazz.\n\nThodoris Ziarkas is a bassist with a full tone\, a solid time\, and an inventive and open mind\, sought after in Folk music\, Jazz\, and Avant-garde. He is leading his own band Valida Calda.\n\nDrummer Phelan Burgoyne is mature at a young age\, musical and daring\, influenced by Paul Motion and Jon Christensen. He is leading his own trio with Rob Luft and Martin Speake.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n0 New\n\n\n\n\n
