SUMMARY:MOPOMOSO ‘THE AFTERNOON SESSIONS’ PRESENT...
DESCRIPTION:\nYVES CHARUEST (SAX) / DOMINIC LASH (BASS) duo\n+\nMATT HUTCHINSON (piano) solo\n+\nSUE FERRAR (violin) / KEN IKEDA (electronics) / JOHN RUSSELL (guitar) trio\n\nTHE MUSICIANS\nMontreal based alto saxophonist YVES CHARUEST was a member of the Peter Kowald Trio (1985-1990) with Peter Kowald and Louis Moholo\, with whom he played extensively in Europe and in the USA. He has also worked with John Betsch\, Agustí Fernández\, Georg Graewe\, Roscoe Mitchell\, William Parker\, Mathias Schubert and Nate Wooley\, as well as with many of his fellow Canadian creative musicians such as Jean Derome\, Lisle Ellis\, Michel Ratté and Sam Shalabi. A precise player with a fine sense of melodic form he is ably accompanied here by bassist\nDOMINIC LASH whose empathetic and richly varied playing style is well known to Mopomoso regulars. A duo with an unfolding and engaging narrative. From backing Little Stevie Wonder on his second UK tour to Luciano Pavarotti’s recording engineer\, from jazz with Mike Osborne to the Chris Burn Ensemble and other free improvisation luminaries such as Phil Wachsmann\, pianist MATT HUTCHINSON has lost none of his enthusiasm and flair for music. A skilled and highly experienced musician his playing is\, in equal measures\, both playful and profound and very much in the moment.\n\n\n\n\n\nTwo highly individual musicians join renowned guitarist JOHN RUSSELL for a trio that promises to involve close listening and an exploration of all the components that make up their combined Istrumental voices. SUE FERRAR has worked with a.o The London Improvisers Orchestra and Evan Parker and has played her violin in Ernest Shackleton’s hut in the Antarctic. KEN IKEDA has performed with many musicians across the world where his electronic treatments have served to extend and reveal new aspects of his colleagues’ work. A trio where space and intricacy go hand in hand.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Oded Tzur Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Oded Tzur is a New York City based saxophonist\, composer and bandleader. His work explores fundamental connections between different musical traditions and draws influence from the art of storytelling. Tzur is also responsible for the development of “Middle Path”\, a saxophone technique that extends the instrument’s microtonal capacity. His second album on the Enja label was released in April 2017.\n\nNew album just selected as one of the 10 indispensable jazz albums in Inrockuptibles in France. https://www.lesinrocks.com/2017/10/06/musique/10-nouveaux-albums-de-jazz-indispensables-11992088/\n\n"If a curtain were to be drawn in front of him\, no one could tell which instrument was being played” - Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia\n\nOded Tzur - tenor sax\nJulian Shore - piano\nPetros Klampanis - bass\nOfri Nehemya – drums\n\nOded went through a long process of studying Indian classical music. “In a way\, the album was an attempt to explore whether the contents of that tradition can be applied to the jazz scene of 2015 New York” says the saxophonist\, “whether a raga can be placed on top of a moving bass and still adhere to its rules of melodic movement. And whether that would make sense.”\n\nAs the quartet continued to perform its music around the world\, Tzur has gained a better understanding of these traditions and their internal dialogue. “The similarities are nuanced and hidden deep under the surface\, but uncovering them is well worth the effort” he continues\, “As Joseph Campbell had put it: ‘Myths are public dreams; dreams are private myths’. Music is a private dream made public.”\n\nhttps://youtu.be/ZtHzOicisY8\n\nhttps://youtu.be/IYUCXfLp2Vk\n\n \n\nThe Coltrane Quartet of the 21st Century – CD Journal\, Japan\n\nOded Tzur is one of the great musical thinkers of our time – Wolf Kampmann (DE)\n\nIf music has the potential to tell stories\, saxophonist Oded Tzur proves himself one of the jazz world’s premier storytellers on Translator’s Note – Dan Mcclenaghan\, All About Jazz (US) \n\nIn the way that Coltrane found the deepest possible kinship to religious devotion in a record like “A Love Supreme\,” Tzur is finding a kinship just as deep and just as simple in essence with poetry and storytelling. The result is music of extraordinary power and beauty and\, hallelujah\, stunning 21st century originality. – Jeff Simon\, Buffalo News (US)\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n"If a curtain were to be drawn in front of him\, no one could tell which instrument was being played” - Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia\n\n\n
