SUMMARY:Thelonious - two special shows for Monk's 100th birthday
DESCRIPTION:Hans Koller (Valve Trombone\, Euphonium)\nMartin Speake (Alto Saxophone)\nCalum Gourlay (Bass)\nJeff Williams (Drums)\n\nTaking inspiration from the Steve Lacy/Roswell Rudd School Days band from the early 1960s\, Thelonious explore the entire Monk repertoire with both childlike curiosity as well as forensic attention to detail. Through collective learning of Monk’s unique catalogue of 70 tunes from the complete original recordings in a slow process lasting several months of regular playing\, probing\, rehearsing\, reflecting\, memorising\, meditating\, internalising and improvising\, Thelonious arrive at flexible interpretations of the material that are as dangerous as anything in contemporary music\, as well as comforting\, groovy and dreamy. It makes for a very special couple of nights of celebration at the Vortex during the London Jazz Festival\n\nMartin has worked extensively with Monk alumnus Paul Motian (Check out Martin’s ECM recording with him\, Change of Heart)\, and Hans has played and recorded with the original Monk repertoire guru Steve Lacy (London Ear). Calum and David are two of the most melodic and cutting-edge rhythm players active on the London jazz scene today\, perfects partners in the exploration of Monk’s music.\n\nCheck out their recent BBC broadcast with Steve Cardenas:\n\nhttps://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0978084\n\n

SUMMARY:Huw Warren Trio Brasil + Dave Smith solo
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nMusic by Heremeto Pascoal\, Guinga\, Tom Jobim\, Egberto Gismonti\, Pixinguinha and more.\n\n\nHuw Warren is one of Britain's leading pianists\, recently to be heard on the ECM label with the band Quercus. But he is one of the few musicians who has made an album exclusively devoted to the iconoclastic Brazilian Hermeto Pascoal. This acts as a foundation to cover the whole waterfront of Brazilian jazz.\nHuw Warren – Piano\n\n\nDave Whitford – Bass\n\n\nZoot Warren – Drums\n\nDave Smith is a thrilling drummer. A member of the Loop Collective\, he came to prominence as one of the members of Outhouse\, Outhouse Ruhabi and Fofoulah\, MA and many more. Over the past 5 years\, we have seen him less often\, as he has been the drummer with Robert Plant. A great chance to hear his rhythmic and sonorous personality.\n\n
