SUMMARY:Loz Speyer's Time Zone
DESCRIPTION:Loz Speyer - trumpet\, flugelhorn\n\nMartin Hathaway - alto sax\, bass clarinet\n\nStuart Hall - guitar\n\nDave Manington - double bass\n\nAndy Ball - drums\n\nMaurizio Ravalico – congas\n\n+ special guest\, percussionist Satin Singh\n\n \n\n“An ensemble led by a trumpeter/composer who has absorbed the essence of Cuban music and distilled it quite cunningly into an improvisatory context\, with no compromise to either culture… Gritty\, graceful sounds with a dark-light intensity.” - Kevin Legendre\, Echoes\n\n \n\nTIME ZONE plays an innovative "deep fusion" of Cuban music and Jazz - soulful\, catchy and rhythmically provocative. Cuban elements are re-assembled\, as in collage\, or mutated to fit odd meters\, yet still with a Cuban feel - Bilingual compositions where the groove can change in mid flow\, like suddenly turning a corner\, a new view opening up\, another way of looking at things.\n\nThis unusual\, deeply humourous music expresses some of the surreal complexity of life in Cuba - and of life in general - there are usually at least things things going on at once! Speyer's compositions for Time Zone grew out of the collision of Cuban culture with his own\, in a personal/family sense as well as a musical sense; and they draw fully on the band's extensive experience in both musical languages…\n\nThis line-up came together in 2012 - individually band members have worked with Django Bates\, Kenny Wheeler\, Radiohead\, Hermeto Pascual\, Yann Tiersen\, Orquesta Chepin-Choven\, Jamiroquai\, Loop Collective\, Brian Abrahams\, Mark Lockhart\, Jesus Alemany… to name but a few.\n\n“Traditional Cuban dance music informs a probing crossover composer’s intelligence\, in which time signatures are shuffled and idioms overlaid… Nobody writes music quite like Loz Speyer\, and he’s long deserved a bigger stage.” - John Fordham\, the Guardian\n\n
